...runs between the classic ship-building town of Sjötorp on the shores of Lake Vänern and the village of Mem on the Baltic Sea creek of Slätbaken, one of the innermost waterways on the Swedish east coast.

VÄTTERN CANAL CHARTER OFFERS one or more weeks of adventurous holiday on a rented family boat, either one of its own craft or one rented from a private owner. We do however have two requirements, that you have at least an inshore yacht master's diploma and/or certified experience of seamanship and navigation. A knowledge of manoeuvring in harbours and narrow waters is necessary and the inland lakes of Roxen, Boren, Vättern, and Viken, which are included in the canal route, require some considerable experience of navigation.

THE COMMONEST TRIP IS A ONE-WAY JOURNEY along the whole of the canal Sjötorp-Söderköping, or in the opposite direction – the red route. The journey comprises 185 km and includes 52 locks. A week is quite sufficient and allows one or two days for longer stops or a little detour in Lake Vättern or into the Kinda Canal. However, many people choose a 14 day trip to give more time for experiencing all the interesting things along the canal without hurrying. To make things easier for you, we can also make arrangements at extra charge to have your car moved to your destination so you do not need to worry about return transport. During the peak season (weeks 24-34) the changeover day is Mondays and during the early and late seasons it is Sunday.

EXTREMELY PICTURESQUE, EASY TO NAVIGATE, AND RELAXING characterise the return journey Sjötorp-Karlsborg-Sjötorp – the blue route. You do not need to think about car transport and you can decide whether or not to include a detour on Lake Vättern, depending on the weather forecast. One week is a suitable period, which will give you time to acquaint yourself with places like Lyrestad, Töreboda, and Vassbacken, the beautiful Lake Viken, and Forsvik with its unique industrial history.

THE EASTERN STRETCH OF THE GÖTA CANAL – the green route – is also the most eventful part. Here is also an opportunity to acquaint yourself with the beautiful, exciting, and historical Kinda Canal. You can choose from a selection of different combinations depending on the type of boat: Motala-Mem-Linköping-Motala; Motala-Kinda Canal (Hycklinge)-Motala or Söderköping-Kinda Canal-Söderköping, to quote a number of examples.
