Welcome to the AB Göta Kanalbolag's web site. We hope it contains all information you need for exploring Sweden's "Grand Canal" this summer.

The Göta Canal is not only Sweden¹s greatest cultural and historic monument. It is an engineering feat of world class, with the same dignity as the Eiffel Tower, the Statue of Liberty or the Panama Canal. Proof of this can be seen in the distinction of ³International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark², awarded to the Göta Canal in 1998. This is an honour of which we are very proud. It is especially welcome since it coincides with the drive being planned for the new millennium.

We estimate that about 1.7 million people visit the Göta Canal every year. During the summer, about 4,500 leisure craft travel on the canal, together with ten passenger vessels. These are amazing figures. At the same time, we are still not satisfied ­ we want even more visitors to enjoy the Göta Canal and its surroundings.

Our plans for the coming years include a wide range of developments and improvements. These will be aimed not only at presenting the Göta Canal as a live lesson in waterways and their history, but also at increasing the level of accessibility and service in partnership with companies and local authorities. We are working continuously to make sure the Göta Canal remains a world class attraction. Why not take the chance to explore the canal and see for yourself?
