Map of Sweden's "Grand Canal"

The Göta Canal stretches from Mem on an inlet of the Baltic near Söderköping, through Lake Vättern to Sjötorp on Lake Vänern, north-east of Mariestad. Together with the Trollhätte Canal, the Göta Canal forms a continuous waterway through the heart of Sweden.

Manmade length: 87 km
No. of locks: 58, including two manually operated
Aqueducts: Two, one at Ljungsbro (built in 1970) and one at Kungs Norrby, east of Borensberg (built in 1993)
Highest point: Lake Viken (eastern section) 91.8 m above sea level.
