AB Göta kanalbolag was founded in 1810 when work started on building the canal. The company is the second oldest in Sweden and has been owned exclusively by the State since 1978. The company's business consists of canal operation and property administration. Canal traffic includes both leisure craft and commercial vessels. The canal charges represent only about 20% of the company's total revenue. The property operation consists of administration of forests (about 5,000 hectares), land and about 300 properties. In addition, the company carries out annual maintenance and renovation aimed at restoring the canal environment to its original condition. Each year, the State contributes SEK 15 million to operation and maintenance.
